locked to one kells.
This is disgusting. Vile. Horrible.

The Ultimate Lifeform is not meant to be susceptible to illness. If anything, he's supposed to be able to kill any bacteria or virus that comes within two acres near him. (Okay, exaggeration, but you get the point.) Instead, here he lays, huddled up into the sheets of his warm bed, the bed he hated to be in right now.

Shadow the Hedgehog, ladies and gentleman, is, for the first time in his life, a victim of the flu.

Yes, really. Snotty, runny, stuffy nose, sore throat, burning headache and all, he is in terrible shape.

On the dresser beside him lays a box of Cleanix brand tissues (his favorite fake tissue brand, natch), some Wix vapor rub, a vaporizer, and some Chloroseptim spray. How much of it is helping, he can't really tell, given his condition is so bad that he can hardly pierce through the fog of illness. He simply rests his head against a propped-up pillow, eyes watery and nose dripping, hating every single second of it.

He just wants it to be over already.

At least he doesn't have to go it alone. Kelly doesn't know much about an Ultimate Lifeform's capacity for illness, but she does know flu and how best to treat it. She's fallen ill with similarly bad sicknesses the last couple of times she's been to Sinnoh (the Super Contest events she was visiting for just had to fall in the winter months, didn't they?) and now she gets to put her well-honed remedies to good use to try and get Shadow back on his feet again.

She's quiet as she pushes the door open, peeking inside the room to check that Shadow hasn't dozed off while she's been gone. Upon seeing him awake she slips inside, moving towards the bed and sitting down gingerly at his side. She places the steaming mug of tea that she's brought in with her on the dresser for the time being, leaning in a little closer over Shadow.

"Hey." Her voice is soft as she speaks. "How are you feeling?"

Shadow normally would have preferred to go it alone, honestly. He didn't want to seem vulnerable to anyone, no matter who it may be. The few times he did, he wanted nothing more than to go hole up in a cave and slowly recover or die, just as a frightened or hostile animal would often do.

Instead, he was being nursed back to health by someone he loved, and although he still didn't enjoy feeling weak in front of her, it was considerably more tolerable. It was much like if Maria soothed him in his time of need, just with a bit more... fire, to put it simply.

Nope, said his body as it threw him into a nasty coughing fit at that moment. He felt the phlegm build up in his throat, and he sincerely hoped he wasn't about to hack up globs of mucus right in front of her. There's her answer. He felt like death.
Magma grunt Kelly [Pokemon Emerald OC]: That's too sad...I don't like it[personal profile] redhotmagma on November 23rd, 2012 08:03 pm (UTC)
Don't worry, she's seen Casey hack up much worse things onto her carpet. ...Okay maybe that's not a very dignified comparison, but, in short, this can't gross her out anywhere near as much as stepping in furballs in the morning can. Kelly knows having appearances to keep up, so she can sympathise with Shadow right now, in a way; she knows he's prideful, so she'll try to make things easier for him if she can. Taking any and all gross stuff in her stride will be a start (she will even keep all the grossed out cringing firmly hidden if he snots on her at all).

"Shh. It's okay, don't force yourself to speak." She reaches out and presses her hand to Shadow's forehead. She lets it linger there for a moment before finally withdrawing it again, frowning—Shadow feels far warmer to the touch than he usually does, not that it's any surprise. "Your temperature's still pretty high...I think we'll keep an eye on that, okay? I brought you some tea, if you'd like some."

The weakest, tiniest purr emitted from him, all from the touch of her hand. Shadow felt awful, but it could have been worse. He could have been all alone with no one to care for him, having to grumpily ride this out all on his own. Instead, he had her, and that eased the pain of the situation in general.

"Mm... wait," he croaked, waving a hand at the tea. "I want to take my temperature first. I cannot let it get too h-high--"

He hacked loudly for a moment, a hand gripping tightly onto his chest, aching from his exhausted lungs. He scrambled for a trash can just in front of the dresser, messily expelling just a little more of the, um, germiness. Ew.
Magma grunt Kelly [Pokemon Emerald OC]: Hm. That's really...interesting.[personal profile] redhotmagma on November 23rd, 2012 09:50 pm (UTC)
Ew indeed. There may have been the tiniest flinch from Kelly, betraying her otherwise perfectly un-fussed expression. She rubs Shadow's back, or at least as much of it as she can without catching on his spines, drawing wide, soothing circles with her palm.

"Okay, we'll take it." Reaching across to the dresser, Kelly pokes around for the thermometer box. When she finds it she opens the lid and draws out the glass mercury thermometer. She holds the end out around mouth-level for Shadow, her hand still at his back.

"This is delicate, so be careful with it, okay? Say "ahh".

Chaos, he feels like he's being treated like a child. Shadow scowls briefly, showing his clear distaste with this response, and he grabs the thermometer, sticking it gently under his tongue. From there, he holds it firmly with his lips, arms folding over his chest and ears sulking down from his head.

Not only is he being treated like a child, but he's acting like one, given the way he's basically pouting like an immature, cranky child right now.

Yeah, he's not exactly the best patient.

A look of surprise flashes over Kelly's face as Shadow snatches the thermometer away from her, her hand caught hovering unsuspectingly in the air. She lowers it back to her lap with a sigh and gives Shadow a firm smile. It's one of her very specialist smiles, a smile that has a dancing humour to it but is also just sharp enough to carry a clear warning. She raises a hand to his head and lightly brushes her fingertips over one of his ears while still continuing to smile dissonantly.

"Don't sulk, Shadow. It's ungentlemanly." If he acts like a child, she's going to keep treating him like one, so it's in Shadow's best interests if he behave nicely.

Without disrupting the hunk in his mouth, that was the only noise he could make. Shadow then unravels his arms, yet he digs his fingernails, absent of gloves, into the sheets, frustration sizzling beneath his surface. He doesn't want any of this right now. It is stupid and unnecessary. He is sick here, and all he knows to do right now is to shut off the world and curl up in a ball of spiny misery.

Soon enough, after hearing a tiny beep, he yanks the thermometer from his mouth, looking over to take a gander of his heat. Normal temperature for a wild, humanoid hedgehog is around 96.8F, yet here he was at four full degrees above the norm, at 100.9F. The sight makes him slowly sulk back into his pillow, groaning disappointingly. Great. Just great.

Kelly gently takes the thermometer and looks for herself, not that it does her much good—as she examines the measurement she realises she doesn't know what a normal temperature would look like for Shadow. Not in numbers, anyhow. But of course, his reaction told her enough of what she needs to know. She casts a wry glance down at him, an eyebrow raised.

"Not so good, huh?"

He looks so pitiable to her, trapped under covers and tissues by sickness, but as much as she doesn't want to see Shadow suffer, Kelly can't help but be fascinated. She's never seen him as vulnerable or exposed, and in a way it feels like she's getting a private view of a side of him she hasn't seen and doesn't know if or when she will see again. She wants to remember what sick Shadow is like, take in all the subtler and more noticeable changes in temperament and mood, and hold onto that forever. Then maybe she'll know him a little better.

She shifts herself further back onto the bed, turning her long figure around so she's lying at Shadow's side and propping herself up on her elbow, before she runs a hand up the covers and to Shadow's heated face, stroking his cheek with her thumb.

"...Hey. You'll be okay. Even if it's uncomfortable now, the worst won't last for long. You should keep hydrated if your temperature's high...you know, I put extra honey in your tea..." There may be some none too subtle hinting and smiling going on there. Sweet things will make you feel be~tter...

Shadow yearns for the opposite, unfortunately. After this is all said and done, he wants her to forget about this, as if it all never happened. He doesn't want to be remembered by anyone as a vulnerable, feeble little darling who needs his boo-boos and flaws tended to. That's the opposite of who he was designed to be, the Ultimate Lifeform. Like hell is he going to let that slide.

Of course, Kelly also knows him very well by now, and oh, how she ever so subtly displays that knowledge with her statement. He flinches at that finger to his cheek, but he settles into that touch, the weakest trill echoing from his chest and throat at the idea of a nice tea with extra honey.

"Mm," he hums with a final decision of acceptance. He reaches for the tea and gives it a gentle whiff. Mm, green tea with lots of honey. That's a combination that can't be beaten.

"Thank you."

His voice is nothing but a strained whisper before he takes a slow, cautious sip. Once the flavor and the heat reaches his mouth and throat, his purring escalates. That is very, very soothing. He'll be guzzling this all day, he's sure.
